It's been two years since we were gifted Lubec's lauded The Thrall and finally today, we get their second full length with Cosmic Debt.

Thematically exploring karmic debenture in life, Cosmic Debt gifts us the Lubec we've grown to love over the years; dreamgaze personified by reverbed string riffs, eruptive drumming by Matt Dressen and vocals that call for attention.

Four fuzzy instrumental-like interludes break up a pleasant distortion of tracks, led by layers of Eddie Charlton's ripe vocality. Piano playing by Caroline Jackson adds a slightly delicate but necessary element which, coupled with her sometimes rawly spurted vocals (like in the album's title track), round out the sound that separates Lubec from other "gazey" acts in town.

Lubec's release show for Cosmic Debt is tomorrow at Blackwater with supporting performances from Talkative, Dog Thieves, Two Moons and Radler.

It's been a minute since the last Saturday Night Sounds. All this unnecessarily debilitating heat does not a blog post make. Now that it's cooled down in the most bipolar way, let's get back to business.  While most of us have been lazing around sun drunk on Vitamin D and PBR, the boys of Talkative have been furiously busy at work. They've just gotten back from their European tour after playing some stints at Treefort, and they also dropped a new EP earlier this month.

F Sharp Voice offers the same subconscious joyride we love them for, heralding their upcoming full length due sometime this year or early next. It's perfect for this chill night, because Talkative is perfect for everything.

There's been quite the buzz flying around the Mt. Portland compilation, and that buzz could not be more warranted. An idea turned reality, solo musician Joel Magid saw how transmuted Portland and its music scene have become, and decided to capture it one track at a time. Featuring 13 of PDX's most beloved and brightest, like the Century, Talkative and what very well may be the last recording from Grandparents to name a few, the Mt. Portland compilation doesn't even come off as such thanks to its production. Each original, previously unreleased track was recorded at Buzz or Howl Studios by owner Stan Wright. Though the bands on the comp aren't bred of the same genre, Wright's analog recording technique melded each contributed track seamlessly, resulting in a collection that's more cohesive than just compiled. Both Wright and Magid fronted recording time, pressings and all other costs themselves, keeping the compilation not for profit and free for us to consume.

When it comes to throwing your hands in and being a team player, there isn't a finer group of young gentleman that knows more about this than our own Hands In. Sensual wailer Erick Crosby heads the forefront of this endeavor, backed by Chad Davis and Cody Berger, both of whom are members of two other Portland psych-garage fits, Ah God and Talkative. Hands In have been featured on The Deli Portland before as part of last year's PDX Pop Now! post, but it's due time to give them proper mention. The fourth annual Treefort Music Festival is proving to be the biggest one yet. Not only is it their first year as a licensed LLC, but this year’s lineup is larger than any previous year with over 400 musical acts, not to mention whole mini-festivals dedicated to comedy, performance art, technology, yoga, skateboarding, beer, and then some.

With massive national musical acts headlining the festival like TV On The Radio, Built To Spill, Foxygen, Yacht, Viet Cong, Of Montreal and !!!, just to name a few, the $139 price of a full-weekend pass is pretty much already god damned steal, and that’s barely 1.5% of the full 2015 lineup. Adding to the glory of this year’s festival, the vast array of amazing Portland bands making the trip to Boise makes Portland one of the most represented cities of the festival. Think of it as a huge rager with all your favorite Portland bands and friends, just in a new, way more fun location.
